Stellar And Other Crypto Are Now Accepted By UNICEF - Stellar (XLM) News. Sunday, September 23

Stellar and other cryptocurrencies are now accepted for donations by the UNICEF

The humanitarian agency welcomes the crypto technology

A variety of cryptocurrencies are now accepted as donation methods by the French division of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), according to an announcement via its official webpage. The Paris-based humanitarian agency embraced the potential of digital coins following a successful fundraising campaign that started early this year.

GameChaingers – given name to the aforementioned humanitarian fundraiser – began in February, 2018 as the first fund-raising campaign of this kind, solely focused on crypto assets, specifically, Ethereum. Assistants to the event, which were known as Gamers, were encouraged to rent out hash power from several graphic cards available at the moment to mine Ethereum, as if they were part of a mining pool, but locally.

Part of the ethers mined were used to partially finance various charity projects the organization was developing in Syria.

The success of this crypto fundraiser has led the French branch of the humanitarian agency to expand its portfolio, so well-wishers and other individuals looking to donate for their cause can now do it not only in Ethereum, but in eight more cryptocurrencies – these being Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, Litecoin, Dash, Monero, EOS, and Stellar. The latter’s Twitter account for the blockchain project’s Reddit made echo of this news. “UNICEF France now accepts donations in Cryptocurrencies including stellar! via /r/Stellar #xlm #stellar https://ift.tt/2xuslGp” it said.

People can also donate to their charity project in other crypto-related way, though. If the cryptocurrency is minable, they can donate their hash power to mine that coin. Logically, this modality exclude those non-minable assets such as EOS, Ripple and Stellar.

The Executive Director of UNICEF France, Sébastien Lyon, stated that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology have allowed them reach potential donors who were unable to contribute to their charity in other ways. “It is an innovation in terms of solidarity and fundraising that we are still few to propose, but which tends to become more democratic,” he said.
