IOTA’s Snapshot of Tangle Being Carried Out Today - Why Do They Do That? IOTA News. Monday, September 17

IOTA Cryptocurrency News

IOTA’s snapshot of Tangle being carried out today (why do they do that?)

From 10:00 UTC to 17:00 UTC, no confirmations on the Mainnet will be processed

IOTA’s dev team has announced it will be doing a global snapshot of its Tangle protocol today, September 17. According to the news published on their official Tweeter account @iota_dev, all users running a node will be able to keep it working as usual. However, no confirmations on the Mainnet will be processed during this period:

“Global snapshot is now in progress, 10:00 UTC until 17:00. There will be no confirmations on the Mainnet during this period. You can continue running your node as usual if your database size is not an issue.”

Why snapshooting Tangle?

While these global snapshots are not a new thing on the IOTA network, there are still users and curious people who don’t know the reason behind this measure.

Tangle – the data structure used by IOTA – has been growing in size over the last few months, and while this is a positive indicator of the mass adoption this network has been experimenting lately, it also triggers the alarms of the engineering team, for this growth in database size could pose a significant problem for nodes that are limited in hardware resources.

In order to prevent this, the dev team uses this measure to save all balances, while pruning the history and data of all transactions. In a sense, they are “resetting” the database size, so to start anew, but keeping all addresses and their respective balances intact.

This way of trimming history data is not free of issues, however. According to dev team member Hans Moog, the more they use global snapshots to deal with this problem, the more impractical it becomes, for they have to halt all confirmations on the Mainnet, thus generating backlog, among other issues.

To solve this, they are working on switching to local snapshots, so node operators can keep their nodes working without maintenance, in addition to save them a huge amount of disk space and making the overall network even faster.
