IOTA’s Tangle could help fighting global warming

The optimization of data would make energy systems more efficient

It seems that the use of IOTA’s network could pose benefits that transcend its main focus of serving as the platform for the Internet of Things (IoT), and even contribute to prevent global warming with the handle of data in a smart way. That is what Markus Gebhardt, a member of the public IOTA project, believes of the distributed ledger technology (DLT).

In a Medium post, Markus expresses that current systems cannot rely solely on the presence of big chunks of data; analyzing and processing them in an intelligent way is crucial for its optimization, a much-needed step in the making of new, better business models in the future. “Big data has to become smart data,” he says. “By 2025, global sales of intelligent analysis methods for big data applications will increase to more than 85 billion euros, experts estimate.”

This all comes in the wake of the alarms triggered due to the world heading towards an increase of three to four degrees global warming, with catastrophic consequences for all forms of life within the planet, according to the conclusion reached by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In this regard, the IPCC brainstormed ideas to face this threat, and one of them was the “transformation of the energy system.”

Smart energy

“In order to avoid emissions, wind and solar energy are an important element here. In order to make sensible use of this renewable energy in a decentralized energy system, the exchange of innumerable data and payment flows is necessary. At this point, IOTA comes into play,” Markus explains, adding that the Tangle can become a key element in handling these data and transactions, as well as processing and analyze them to optimize the functioning of this system.

For example, in a world with autonomous cars that recharge themselves, data such as forecasts or trend data needs to be exchanged in a seamless way to determine, for example, when it is most suitable to charge the vehicle. As Markus explains, the standardization of renewable energy supposes that charging in dark periods should be avoided, as the energy doesn’t come from the Sun, but from a fossil-fired power plant. If done so, CO2 emissions and money are saved, since the market price for electricity is even more expensive in times of wind and overcast skies. “That is also the reason why weather data and weather forecasts are very important,” he says.

However, data does not limit to that. He also talks about usage times of the car, dates for the planned route, location and availability of charging stations, and many more. All this data has to be available, in order to be processed in an intelligent way, so to make the most out of it in terms of emission, money and time savings.

“Optimized data and their transport and payment through IOTA Tangle can ensure that smart systems contribute to reduce Carbon Emissions and help prevent the climate catastrophe,” he concludes.
